About the Chair

The Marie Jahoda Visiting Chair

Interdisciplinarity and international perspectives have become  essential for the field of gender studies (Central themes include globalisation, migration, Eastern Europe, service society, organisational change, etc.). The Marie-Jahoda Visiting Chair in International Gender Studies at the Ruhr-University Bochum was established in 1994 with a mandate to foster international efforts and co-operation through a focus on research and international teaching. At present, the Marie Jahoda Visiting Chair has developed into a permanent element of gender research both in North-Rhine Westfalia (NRW) and throughout Germany. Both the scientific community and the broader public show a vivid interest in the guest professors.

The programme is integrated into the Master Programme in Gender Studies at Ruhr University. It forms an indispensable part of the internationalisation strategy of the Ruhr University.

The Visiting Chair is part of the network Gender and Women’s Studies NRW (German). It cooperates with the five Chairs in Women’s Studies at the Ruhr University Bochum. Prof. Dr. Ilse Lenz and Dipl. Soz.-Wiss. Charlotte Ullrich (English) and Dr. Tanja Scheiterbauer are responsible for the coordination and organisation of the programme.

Visiting professors are leading international scholars in the field of gender studies mostly from the social sciences, history, art history, communications and media.

Thus, the Marie-Jahoda Visiting Chair is a focus for international, interdisciplinary and innovative gender research as well as a forum for international contacts, networking and exchange.

 Lectures

The high level of academic and public interest in the lectures of the visiting professors demonstrates the importance of the programme. These lectures offer international perspectives and new incentives for the theoretical and empirical methods which are at the centre of women's studies in Germany.

 Workshops

Conferences and workshops organised with the guest professors  build bridges to the academic and broader public (women’s bureau officers, colleagues from politics and administration and those engaged in projects). There, leading researchers as well as younger scholars and interested members of the general public get together.

 Seminars

The guest professors co-teach a course which is open to students in the M.A. Gender Studies and all interested students in the respective faculties. The programme is leading the way to the internationalisation of the cooperating disciplines. Furthermore, students can establish international contacts which prove useful during the preparation of their thesis or for an academic year abroad.

 Publications and research projects:

Several research projects have been initiated around the Marie Jahoda guest professorship.

Numerous international books and articles have been published in this context. A list is provided here.

Perspectives:

An interim review has demonstrated that the Marie Jahoda Visiting Chair has contributed significantly to international, interdisciplinary and innovative approaches in gender studies, has developed a forum for international contacts and served as a starting point for many international projects and co-publications. In this way, it has made a fundamental contribution to the internationalisation of research and teaching in gender studies.
