Health literacy
(Digital) health literacy from a social science perspective

Health literacy has been the subject of scientific debate since the 1960s. However, this topic has become particularly explosive at a political and scientific level in the last ten years. This was not least due to the results of the first major studies in the USA and Europe, which predominantly found that the population had inadequate health literacy. This increased interest in health literacy is also reflected in the increasing inclusion of this topic in the political agenda. Among other things, this is evident in the establishment of the Alliance for Health Literacy and the National Action Plan developed in 2018. In addition, digital aspects are becoming increasingly relevant in light of the growth in information and data, as well as the countless areas of application for new technologies.

However, the existing concepts and measurement tools are being critically discussed from different perspectives. Against this background, the dissertation project deals with (digital) health literacy. In the dissertation project, existing concepts and instruments are critically discussed from a social science perspective and linked to praxeological approaches. Different areas of competence and their interlocking with (digital) health literacy will also be considered. Among other things, the influence of competence areas on health and health behavior will be examined.
